DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE:

 This is meant to be a course of 2 hours class and 2 hours working at home per week. This course is created for students who have achieved the Upper-Intermediate level. At the end of the course students will have achieved the C1 level in accordance with the European Council. 

 

ORGANIZATION:

     This course is organized in 3 terms: 1st term (4th October to 22nd December), 2nd term (10th January to 15th April) and 3rd term (26th April to 22nd June).

 

MAIN AIMS:

     The aims of this course are the following:

     To revise the major grammar areas which are known to be essential at an advanced level.

     To be able to use a wide range of structures to express different concepts.

     To be able to use more sophisticated grammar structures with fluency.

     To learn complex grammar: discourse markers (linkers, adverbs and adverbial expressions), have, pronouns, the past: narrative tenses, used to and would, distancing, get, speculation and deduction, adding emphasis (inversion, cleft sentences), unreal uses of past tenses, verb+object+infinitive or gerund, conditional sentences, permission, obligation and necessity, verbs of the senses, gerunds and infinitives, expressing future plans and arrangements, ellipsis and substitution, nouns: compound and possessive forms, so, such and comparison.

     To extend your range vocabulary: work, personality, family, language terminology, word building: abstract nouns, adjectives, nouns and adverbs, time, phrases with get, sound and human voice, describing books, money, history and warfare, compound adjectives, phone language, adjectives+prepositions, word formation: prefixes, place and movement, health and medicine, smiles, travel and tourism, the natural world, words that are often confused, preparing food, humour.

     To enrich your vocabulary by focusing on idioms, synonyms and collocation.

     To build new words by adding affixes.

     To expose you to a variety of stimulating authentic reading texts providing training in reading techniques and strategies needed to deal with the exam reading tasks.

     To expose you to a variety of listening activities providing practice with strategies for handling exam listening tasks.

     To expose you to a variety of accents, both native and non-native.

     To stimulate you to give your own opinions and participate in discussions and role-plays.

     To speak English with confidence and offer them a systematic approach to exam speaking task.

     To work on the pronunciation of difficult sounds, to use phonetic symbols in your dictionary to check pronunciation.

     To develop your writing skills in a variety of genres.

     To have fun while learning English.

 

METHODOLOGY:

 Although the book and the workbook are the bases to get the aims of the course, there is also a MULTIROM with extra practice for the students.

- There are 7 units and each unit is divided in 3 lessons. (A, B, C). There is also a writing, a coloquial English and a revision in each unit.

Workbook with key

- Each lesson in the Student’s book has a three-page section in the workbook with revision of Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation and Lexis in content as well as more Reading practices developement. There is also a listening (CD at the back of the workbook), an exam preactice and collocial English practice.

- Do and correct at home.

- Ask any question in class.

Grammar checker

- It’s a revision of the upper-intermediate level.

- It includes grammar tables and revision exercises.

- At home and you hand in to the teacher to correct.

- The teacher will tell you when you have to do each file.

Multirom

- It’s a CD-ROM, containing a revision of Grammar, Vocabulary, Pronunciation, Colloquial English, Dictation activities and Exam practice.

 - It’s also an AUDIO CD for students to use in a CD player. It has the audio material for the Workbook listening activities

- At home.(You have a photocopy to write your score)

- The teacher will tell you when you have to do each part.
